Determination of Pacifier and Bottle Usage Status of 0-24 Month-Old Babies and Children Registered in the Family Health Center
Abstract
Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the pacifier and bottle use status of mothers with 0-24 month-old babies/children registered in a family health center.
Materials and Methods: The sample of the descriptive study consisted of 250 mothers with babies/children aged 0-24 months. "Mother Child Information Form" and "Questionnaire on Using Pacifier and Bottle" were used. The research was conducted between March 01, 2021 and September 01, 2021. Number-percentage and chi-square tests were used in the statistical analysis of the data.
Findings: It was determined that 48.4% of mothers’ use pacifiers, 71.1% of mothers who use pacifiers start using pacifiers between 0-1 month, and 54.6% use pacifiers when their babies cry or are restless. It was determined that 49.2% of mothers’ use baby bottles, 56.1% of mothers who use baby bottles start using baby bottles in the first three months. It was determined that pacifier and baby bottle use is more common in babies and children who are breastfed for one year (p˂0.05).
Conclusion: It is observed that mothers start using pacifiers and bottles at an early age and use these artificial heads widely. It was determined that the duration of breastfeeding of mothers who used pacifiers and bottles was limited to one year. It is recommended that nurses provide education and consultancy services to mothers and mother candidates from the prenatal period until weaning period on breastfeeding, infant feeding, and pacifier and bottle use.
