Adaptation of the Touch Biography Scale to Turkish: Validity and reliability study

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to adapt the Touch Biography Scale (TBS) to Turkish and to examine the psychometric properties of this scale in terms of validity and reliability. Method: 302 adults participated in the study. The participants were administered a sociodemographic information form, TBS and the Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory-II. Item analysis, principal component analysis and factor analysis were conducted to test the construct validity of the scale. Findings: The results obtained revealed that the TBS adapted to Turkish consists of 25 items and three dimensions. These dimensions are defined as: (1) Touch experiences in childhood, adolescence and adulthood, (2) Tolerance and comfort towards interpersonal touch, (3) Interpersonal comfort level based on touch. It was determined that the three-factor model is suitable in terms of both validity and reliability. Significant negative relationships were found between all sub-dimensions of the DAS and the attachment avoidance dimension of the Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory-II. In addition, negative significant relationships were found between two sub-dimensions of the TBS and attachment anxiety. Conclusion: The findings show that the TBS is a usable, valid and reliable measurement tool for adults in Turkish culture.

Öz

Giriş: Bu çalışmada amaç, Dokunma Biyografisi Ölçeği’nin (DBÖ) Türkçeye kazandırılması ve bu ölçeğin geçerlik ile güvenirlik açısından psikometrik özelliklerinin incelenmesidir. Yöntem: Araştırmaya 302 yetişkin katılmıştır. Katılımcılara sosyodemografik bilgi formu, DBÖ ve Yakın İlişkilerde Yaşantılar Envanteri-II (YIYE-II) uygulanmıştır. Ölçeğin yapı geçerliğini test etmek için madde analizi, temel bileşenler analizi ve faktör analizi yapılmıştır. Bulgular: Elde edilen sonuçlar, Türkçeye uyarlanan DBÖ’nün 25 madde ve üç boyuttan oluştuğunu ortaya koymuştur. Bu boyutlar sırasıyla: (1) Çocukluk, ergenlik ve yetişkinlik dönemine ilişkin dokunma deneyimleri, (2) Kişilerarası dokunuşlara karşı hoşgörü ve rahatlık, (3) Dokunma temelli kişilerarası konfor düzeyi olarak tanımlanmıştır. Üç faktörlü modelin hem geçerlik hem de güvenirlik açısından uygun olduğu belirlenmiştir. DBÖ’nün tüm alt boyutları ile YIYE-II’nin bağlanma kaçınması boyutu arasında anlamlı düzeyde negatif ilişkiler bulunmuştur. Ayrıca, DBÖ’nün iki alt boyutu ile bağlanma kaygısı arasında da negatif yönde anlamlı ilişkiler saptanmıştır. Sonuç: Elde edilen bulgular, DBÖ’nün Türk kültüründe yetişkin bireyler için kullanılabilir, geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçüm aracı olduğunu göstermektedir.
